After all, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Lenovo, and Sony are in the game, and it would be pretty time consuming to go through all of them, which is why we're here to provide a community service message for all and sundry who are considering picking one of these puppies up. Small and thin ones will be the main focus here, since I doubt you'd want to lug around a brick on your travels.

My laptop is a Phoenix

Technically, my laptop is an Apple. But Apples just turn brown and then fall apart. My current PowerBook G4 will soon turn into a MacBook Aluminum (Late 2008). That’s not a literal statement, of course. But with the Macintosh operating system’s built-in “Migration Assistant” and the fact that the software on my PBG4 is current, the transformation should appear pretty convincing.
I haven’t actually received the new MacBook just yet, but I’ve tracked the shipment and it is due here today. I’m pretty freakin’ excited. This is how Christmas morning felt when I was a child! I should calm down, though. There is, after all, a Failure-Out-of-Box possibility. An informal, small sample Macintouch Survey which included 260 MacBook users’ reports, showed an 11.1% initial failure rating (failures covering a wide range of issues). As this is a third generation MacBook, using pre-established concepts in a predominantly new design (they took what they learned from the first couple and started over with those lessons in mind) with pretty darned nice parts…. Well, it could go either way. I have never bought the first of any model of computer and though this could be argued as a third generation machine, it could just as easily be labeled an original design.
I’ve been plugging away on my increasingly slow-by-comparisoin laptop because I am not a graphics-based power user. My work consists of some processor-based number crunching with a little GUI design on top. Still, I’ve seen the speed of those Intel computers and wanted to hop on that zippy bandwagon for a while now. I very nearly purchased one of the blackMacBooks as I could have gotten it at quite a bargain. But I stuck to my aesthetic guns on the basis that I wanted a small metal laptop. That’s why I got this 12″ PowerBook G4 in the first place!

Rumor: Apple To Drop Intel Chipsets

Posted by Muhammad adil khan | Posted in | Posted on 12:16 PM

Lately, there were some rumors that pointed to a change that Apple could make and this is that Apple might replace Intel chipsets with AMD or VIA chipsets for their products. Some consider this very unlikely, but so far nobody explained why. Also, nobody said to us why this change would be good and why it would help Apple.
This is probably why Jon Stokes from Ars Technica decided to make it clear for us and from start he makes it very clear to us that he is “skeptical” and this switch would not be healthy for Apple. First, Jon wonders where will Apple use the chipsets - desktops, laptops, or even in both.
For desktops, Apple could use NVIDIA that will support dual-GPU and because Apple loves data parallelism, NVIDIA SLI is perfect. The speed of their applications could be improved with the help of “GPGPU” in combination with Snow Leopard and NVIDIA SLI. This would surely impress a lot of users or not as Snow Leopard will be available in mid-2009 exactly when Larrabee will be launched and Intel’s GPU is based on a many-core x86 multiprocessor(!). However, another chipset that destroys the rumors is Intel’s Nehalem that will be out by the end of this year.
As for laptops, Apple could replace Intel only for MacBook Air as they could use better integrated graphics processors as some say that Intel’s Core 2 Duo are not so capable. However, NVIDIA should decrease their packages in order to match Intel’s reduced-footprint packages which is a hard thing to do.
Personally, I agree with Jon Stokes and I don’t know why Apple would consider to replace Intel chipsets because those are good just like that and, IMHO, AMD chipsets could never meet the expectations (I prefer VIA chipsets). I guess it remains to see if the rumors could become a reality or if they are meant to do harm.

The original Classmate debuted in March 2007 as part of Intel's "World Ahead" program aimed at schoolchildren in emerging markets. Available with a 1GB SSD (solid-state drive) packing Linux or a 2GB SSD packing Windows XP, the Classmate was widely viewed as Intel's response to the Linux- and AMD-based OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) device.

Intel: ARM's the reason the iPhone... sucks?

Posted by Muhammad adil khan | Posted in | Posted on 12:05 PM

Okay, look, whether you adore or despise the iPhone, it's pretty hard to make a cohesive argument that it's slow or lags its competitors in offering the "full Internet." Somehow, though, a pair of Intel execs at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei this week have whipped up a whole spiel based on the shaky claim that the iPhone's a dog for processing power and isn't capable of offering a rich Internet experience, going on to suggest that ARM architecture is to blame for the nasty pickle Apple's gotten itself into. Here's the best part, though: until only very recently, Intel itself was a huge player in the ARM game with its XScale line, now owned by Marvell. Isn't it too soon to harsh on a technology you so heavily bought into, guys? Of course, the moral of the story -- if you're buying the execs' line, anyway -- is that the iPhone wouldn't suck if they'd gone with an Intel stack, which they claim is a good two years ahead of the best that ARM has to offer. Said Intel's Pankaj Kedia, pressing on with the smack talk: "I know what their roadmap is, I know where they're going and I'm not worried." Of course, knowing the roadmap inside and out gets a little easier when you're a ginormous ARM licensee.
